Deadly Attack on Tourists in Kashmir Increases Tensions Between India and Pakistan
A Tragic Incident in Pahalgam
A recent attack in Pahalgam, a popular tourist spot in the Kashmir region, has left 26 people dead — 25 of them Indian citizens and one Nepali. Gunmen opened fire on tourists who were visiting the area, shocking the nation and sparking outrage across India.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers fired at close range, targeting people randomly. Some survivors said the gunmen accused them of supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi before shooting.
Photos and videos of the attack’s aftermath flooded social media, showing the pain and grief of the victims’ families.
India Blames Pakistan
The day after the attack, India blamed Pakistan for supporting the militant group responsible. A group called The Resistance Front (TRF) said they carried out the attack, accusing “outsiders” of changing Kashmir’s identity.
India responded by:
- Closing a major border crossing
- Downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan
- Suspending the Indus Water Treaty for the first time
- Cancelling visas for Pakistani citizens
Pakistan denied any role in the attack and reacted by:
- Expelling Indian diplomats
- Closing its airspace
- Stopping trade with India
Pakistan also warned that if India tries to block its water supply, it would consider it an act of war.
What Is The Resistance Front (TRF)?
TRF is a militant group that emerged in 2019. It has been linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks. India has declared TRF a terrorist group.
Kashmiri police have named three suspects in the Pahalgam attack. Two of them are believed to be Pakistani nationals.
Why Kashmir Matters
Kashmir is a disputed region claimed by both India and Pakistan. It’s one of the most militarized areas in the world and has been a flashpoint between the two countries for decades.
In 2019, India took full control of its part of Kashmir by removing its special status, sparking protests and unrest.
Though the government says the region is now safer, attacks like the one in Pahalgam show that tensions are still high.
Public Reaction in India and Kashmir
Thousands of people came out to protest the attack and show support for the victims. Tour operators in the region are facing massive losses due to cancellations.
“There’s been 80-90% cancellation of all our bookings,” said Mohsin, a local tour operator. “If this continues, I’ll have to leave this business.”
In India, anti-Pakistan protests have taken place in Delhi and other cities, raising concerns about increased tension against Kashmiris and Muslims.
What Might Happen Next?
India's Prime Minister Modi has promised to find and punish those responsible. Many experts believe India might strike back — possibly with military force.
In 2019, after a similar attack, India launched airstrikes on Pakistani territory. Now, with its military stronger than before, India might consider more serious action.
However, experts warn that if India takes military steps, Pakistan may respond — increasing the risk of a wider conflict. Without restraint or international help, the situation could get much worse.
